Alexei Yeldashov, a 33-year-old journalist, was found dead in his Khabarovsk flat on 20 January 1997. Yeldashov had been strangled and then stabbed to death and investigators estimated he was killed early on Sunday, 16 January.
From 1986 Yeldashov worked on musical articles and broadcasts for local newspapers, then regional radio and since 1991 for the short wave Far East Russia station.
In September 1997 Khabarovsk police brought a suspect back from St Petersburg. The man, a former Khabarovsk journalist, confessed to killing Yeldashov in a drunken quarrel after they had celebrated the Old New Year. In 1998 Yeldashov’s killer was sentenced to eight years in a penal colony.
