The body of Gennady Bodrov, photographer with the Kursky vestnik newspaper, was found on 19 February 1999. Five days earlier he was invited to take pictures at a wedding and had not been seen since.

Three suspects were soon arrested and in August the men were put on trial, accused of murdering Bodrov and stealing his camera. In September the two who planned and committed the murder were sentenced to 20 and 22 years imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony.

Bodrov was widely known as a photographer in Russia and had exhibited abroad.
