Ivan Fedyunin, politics editor of the Bryanskie novosti newspaper, was killed in his flat late at night on 1 April 1998. The journalist’s body, with numerous knife wounds, was found by policemen summoned by Fedyunin’s colleagues who were worried when he did not come to work.
The police followed several lines of inquiry, one being that the killing could be linked to the journalist’s professional activities. A few days before his death, one of his colleagues said, Fedyunin had received anonymous threats by telephone in response to several critical articles he had recently published about the activities of a number of firms in the Bryansk Region. The possibility that the murder was committed by ordinary criminals was also not excluded.
On 8 April 1998 the police detained an artist from a community centre who was suspected of the crime. No more information is available.
