On 20 October 2000 Oleg Goryansky died in the Severstal company hospital in Cherepovets. He had been found seven weeks earlier severely beaten in the stairwell entrance of an apartment building in town. He died without ever regaining consciousness. Because no documents were found when he was discovered he was only identified shortly before his death.
Goryansky had just begun to work freelance for the TV company after being with the town's TV channel for 18 months. His last assignment was to investigate the distribution of drugs in the town and this was thought to be a possible reason for his death.
Official investigation established that the attack on Goryansky arose out of a private quarrel with an acquaintance when they were drinking together. On 25 December 2000 Goryansky's acquaintance stood trial for manslaughter and was sentenced to 11 years in a strict regime penal colony.
