Freelance photographer Valery Kondakov was attacked late in the evening on 23 December 2000 in Armavir at the dormitory where he was staying. He died later in the local hospital from the injuries he had received.
Kondakov worked for a number of local publications. He was also involved in politics and supported the Communist challenger in coming elections for mayor of Armavir. Colleagues suggested publication in the local paper of Kondakov's photos of the mansions owned by the town's elite, as part of the campaign against the existing authorities, might have been behind the attack.
Kondakov's assailants were waiting for him outside the dormitory when he returned from election headquarters, it was reported, An alternative interpretation was offered by the police who claimed the death was a result of a drunken quarrel.
