Raif Ablyashev, photographer with the local Iskra newspaper, was found unconscious by police at 3 am on 21 October 2000 in the centre of Kungur. He was taken to hospital where he died three days later without regaining consciousness.
A criminal investigation was opened into the attack, the possible motives thought to be robbery or hooliganism. Three years later the prosecutor's office admitted that the death remained a mystery.
Ablyashev died the day before an exhibition of his work was due to open.
