On 8 February 2008 Yelena Shestakova, formerly a journalist with the Pyat uglov newspaper, was attacked in St Petersburg and later died from her wounds.
An 18-year-old first year student at the college of tourism and hotel service was subsequently arrested for this and the attempted murder of a security guard. He kept records of his crimes on his computer and was judged criminally insane and in February confined to a mental hospital.
