Freelance journalist Nikolai Mozolin, who contributed to the Novy Peterburg newspaper, died on 30 March 1997 as a result of a beating he received from unidentified assailants in early March.
A former policeman, Mozolin did not report the incident to law enforcement agencies. On 2 April an investigation began into Mozolin’s death, qualified as manslaughter (article 111.2) under the new Criminal Code.
It is thought he was the victim of people engaged in “child-trafficking” since he had published several articles in Novy Peterburg about the abuse of international adoption.
