On 19 October 1997 the body of Lydia Lazarenko, copy// editor of the Birzha plus svoi dom weekly (Nizhny Novgorod), was found on the rubbish tip in the town of Dzerzhinsky An investigation was opened involving the police and the FSB.
On 20 May 1998 the trial began of the man accused on Lazarenko’s murder in the Nizhny Novgorod Region Court and eleven days later on 1 June Sergei Zelenin was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony for murder with purposes of self-enrichment (Article 105.2).
