The body of Christopher Reese, executive producer of the STS TV company, was found in the flat he rented in Moscow on Monday, 27 September 1999. He had been stabbed repeatedly.
STS began broadcasting in Russia in 1996. Reese came to Russia in 1998, with 12 years' experience in the field, to produce shows particularly aimed at youth and young adults for the company which by 1999 could broadcast to a potential Russian audience of 74 million in 282 towns and cities.
Reese did not deal with the finances of the company. nothing had been stolen from his apartment and there was no sign of a break-in. Later reports named Reese's death as the first in a series of murders of foreign and Russian gay men visiting two of Moscow's many night clubs. Such a motive was suggested in other journalists' deaths (Sidaui, Rudenko) with more or less conviction.
