On 22 August 1999 local fishermen found the bodies of Yevgeny Vedernikov and Sergei Shcherbovich in a jeep stranded in the River Pecha (Murmansk Region)
Vedernikov, director of Nostalgie-Murmansk radio station, and organiser of the international Arctic trophy car rally, left Murmansk several days previously with cameraman Shcherbovich in a specially prepared vehicle. They intended to test the route of the rally which had taken place each September since the early 1990s on the Kola peninsula.
When found the jeep was 4 feet deep in the river. Investigators could find no signs of violence. The two men were experienced rally drivers. They became stranded in the river at night time and were trying to pull the vehicle clear but might have been overcome by the cold.
